Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day continuing doing our cleanup and getting our work organized. Thank you to those who brought their bags back today! If you can please keep sending them back with your child each day that will make the sending home of work much easier for them to manage. There are only two more days left of school, and I am trying to get them home in smaller chunks so as not to overburden them and the extra bag is very helpful for it! After that we did a writing reflection on our adventures in Sports Day yesterday. It was nice to hear the feedback on what the students thought of it. Then in gym we went outside and enjoyed the sunshine while playing our "Indiana Jones" game. We finished our morning with a couple rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started with our mental math and then worked on a couple of word problems. Ask your child about this. Then we went out to look at how our trees are changing. We finished off the day with our friends, looking at some information on sand dollars and started work on an art project.
Red folders no longer need to be sent back to school. They can stay at home for use of the Raz-Kids and Mathletics login information, which the students will continue to have access to over the summer.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started off with one round of Daily 5. Then in gym we went outside and we had some different activities that we could choose from. Ask your child what they did. After that we went to music and started off by singing some father's day songs. After music we did another round of Daily 5. Then we finished our morning with some sandwich making for the Mustard Seed.
In the afternoon we started with our mental math warmup. Then we went to our friends' class and started learning about sand dollars. After that we talked about the evacuation/fire drill that we were having today with Mrs. Wood. Then we did a quick round of Daily 5 before we had our fire drill/evacuation. We all did an awesome job!
Starting tomorrow, Mr. Soulliere will be sending home some of the work that we have done this year. Please bring in a bag to carry these things in.
Tomorrow is Sports Day. Dress for spending the afternoon outside.

Hello families and friends,
Just a reminder today that tonight is the Celebration of Learning! Families with last names A-N come from 6:00-6:45, and families with last names O-Z come from 7:00-7:45. Our class, along with our friends in Room 51, will be singing our songs for all of you. The students have been told that we will meet in the gym first thing at 6:00 or 7:00 for a quick 10 minutes to sing our songs and then they are free to go and look at the work. Thank you for your cooperation in this!

Hello families and friends,
Today we started with two rounds of Daily 5. Then in gym we played hockey. After our snack we set up our work, then we walked around the Hope and Harmony wings to look at some of the work for the Celebration of Learning. Then we wrote about some of the things that we liked and wondered about the work that we saw.
In the afternoon we started with some instructional writing about what happens to trees in spring. Ask your child what they wrote about. Then we did some mental math and did some math around the work we have done with our branches. We found out that on all of the branches that we have been looking at, we have 106 more leaves now than when we first went out to observe!
Over the last couple days we did some work around figuring out how many more shoes we have in our school since it first opened. We figured out that there are 1208 more student shoes! That is a lot of shoes!

Just a reminder that we are swimming tomorrow through Thursday this week. There has been a slight change in the time that we leave the school, but this does not change our swimming time; it is now scheduled to leave at 9:55. Please send your child's swimsuit and towel in a separate bag for them to keep the wet things in afterwards. Long hair should also be tied back.

Today we started off our day with some reflective writing about the book Big Bugs. Then in dance we learned a new type of dance. Ask your child about this. After that we did two rounds of Daily 5 with Raz-Kids and Mathletics.
In the afternoon we went outside to do some more measurements and observations on our trees. Ask your child what changes we are seeing. Then we did our mental math warmup and then we worked on creating our own word problems. After that we continued doing social studies writing for the three cities. Ask your child which city they are writing about.
Remember, next week we are swimming. Bring your swimsuit and towel in a separate bag so that you have something to put them in after when they are wet.
Library and home reading books are due back tomorrow!

Today we had two rounds of Daily 5. After Daily 5 we practiced our basketball skills in gym. We also got into groups of 4 and did relay races. After gym we learned about a new type of word in writer's workshop called onomatopoeia. Ask your child about this.
In the afternoon we started off with some mental math. Then we worked on some number story problems. After math we continued working on our writing for the three cities we looked at in social studies. We are acting like travel agents and doing some persuasive writing.
Swimming permission and volunteer forms are due back to Mr. Soulliere as soon as possible. We are swimming next Monday to Thursday. We leave the school at 10:10 and get back at 12:10. Volunteers can choose to come on the bus or meet us at the Canyon Meadows swimming pool.
In music we are learning a song called Alberta Bound by Paul Brandt. Practice this song at home.

Today we started with music. Ask your child what they are learning. After that we did a writing activity with the story "Andrew's Loose Tooth", where the students had to think if they were the character Louis what their idea to get Andrew's loose tooth out would be. Ask your child what they came up with. Then in gym we played a round of 4-corners and a couple rounds of bench dodgeball. We finished our morning with a couple rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we went outside to make some more observations and recordings about our branches. Ask your child what new thing they noticed! Then we continued work on our envelope books. This was the last time that they will be given that is dedicated entirely to working on the books. Those who still have work left to do on it will need to get this finished during Daily 5 and any free time they have. We finished off the day continuing planning our "Travel Agent" persuasive writing piece about the three cities that we have looked at.
Next week we are swimming from Monday to Thursday. We talked today about the different things that they will need and what will be expected. Today we started our day with an assembly. This was put on by the students in rooms 3, 4, 70, 71, 72, 73, and 75. Ask your child what they learned from this. Then we had our daily read aloud and went to gym with our friends. After that we did one round of Daily 5, then continued work on our envelope books. We ended the day with a small performance by some of our students.
The Learning Commons Staff is offering a small prize to the first class that gets ALL of their library books returned. Please help your child to remember to bring theirs back. The library books, along with all home reading books, need to be returned by next Friday, June 5th.
Swimming permission and volunteer forms need to be brought back to Mr. Soulliere as soon as possible.

SANDWICH MAKING
For those families who were at Cranston last year, you will remember our Sandwich Making Community Project (donations went to the Mustard Seed) that we were involved in and what a HUGE success it was! For those new to us, throughout the year, we have been working very hard with our students to recognize the importance of giving back to their community. We would like to participate in this project again this year. If we could have each student bring in $2 for this project, it will be used to purchase the sandwich items (bread, ham, mustard, butter, cheese slices, Ziploc bags). Thank you for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

Hello families and friends,
This morning we had buddies and we shared our envelope books with them. After buddies we did dance with Ms. Janelle. Ask your child about what they learned. After that the grade ones did two rounds of Daily 5. The grade twos worked with Mr. Southworth on the computers to do some reading and answering questions. This was a practice trial run for the SLAs that the students will be doing at the beginning of grade 3.
The whole school has new entry and exit doors. The fencing has been added in around door 3 for construction to begin on the new portable that is being added. Our class will now be entering and exiting from the gym doors close to door 2.
After lunch we continued working on our envelope books. After the envelope books we started working on math. Ask your child what we did.
Swim permission forms and volunteer forms need to be returned as soon as possible. Mr. Soulliere got his days mixed up; we are not going swimming next week. We go swimming the week of June 8th to June 11th.
Library and home reading books need to be returned by next Friday, June 5th.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day by planning out some persuasive writing about the three cities that we have looked at with our friends. After that the students learned how to play the game "4 corners" from Mrs. Richardson. We finished our morning with two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started with our mental math, and then began working on some data collection, using yes or no questions to find out information about the students in the class. We finished our day continuing work on our envelope books. These are very close to being finished and they are looking very good!
Volunteer forms went home with children of those parents that had indicated the days that they will be available to volunteer to come swimming with us. If you are available for some days and did not indicate it on the forms that were sent home earlier this month, please email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca> and let me know when you can come. Please have all permission and volunteer forms returned to Mr. Soulliere by this Friday to ensure that they are in and not accidentally forgotten on Monday.
Next week, we are swimming from Monday to Thursday. Please make sure that your child has an extra bag (e.g. a grocery bag) to put their wet swimsuit and towel in after swimming so that their wet things are not sitting right in their backpacks.

In the afternoon we started with our daily mental math. Then we continued work on our envelope books. We have been adding in all the work that we have done on plants and leaves. At the end of the day we worked with our friends on our last round of social studies looking at the city of Calgary.
Swimming forms need to be returned as soon as possible. There are still a few people that I do not have permission forms from. Volunteer forms will be sent home tomorrow for those who had indicated that they are available.

Then we worked on some writing and reflected on some ways that we show our responsibility and are working towards our goals. We then finished our morning, and started our afternoon, by working on the next portions of our envelope books. Ask your child what they are writing about. Then we had a short presentation from the Calgary Public Library, where we learned about some exciting summer reading programs. We finished off our day by working with our friends on our look at Calgary.
Please have swimming permission forms in to me by the end of the week. I will be sending home volunteer forms next week.

Dear Cranston Families,
You are cordially invited to our 2015 Fish Release!
Where: Grotto Mountain Pond, Bow Valley Provincial Park (Map Follows)
When: Friday May 22nd , 2015 at 1:30PM
The day for our Trout release is fast approaching and we finally have the details for the release.
The actual release will take only about an hour, but all families are invited. Feel free to bring your fishing rods and a picnic lunch. The release will go ahead as scheduled rain or shine, so if you choose to come, please dress for all kinds of mountain weather.
People over 16 will require a fishing license if they are going to fish, however children do not.
Staff from the Bow Habitat Station will be on site to answer any questions you may have. They will also be bringing a few additional fish so that as many children as possible will have a fish to release. We would like to request that Cranston Students ONLY have the opportunity to release fish first as they have been watching them grow for months; and should there be any left over, younger siblings are welcome to release one as well.
Please note that this is NOT a school or CBE sanctioned event, so parents will be fully responsible for their own children.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started with two rounds of Daily 5. Then in dance we continued working on our dance from Mary Poppins. After dance we had a friendly competition using our measurement skills. Ask your child about this.
In the afternoon we worked on finishing up our first group for our Prairie Alphabet book about Calgary. We finished off our day working on our envelope books. Ask your child about what they are doing.
Tomorrow there is no school for students. Monday there is also no school.
Fun Lunch is Wednesday, May 20th.
Mr. Soulliere is still missing a few swimming forms. If you have not sent yours in please do that ASAP. Also, permission forms and medical forms for swimming are going home today. Those need to be returned as soon as possible as well.

Today we started with two rounds of Daily 5. Then in dance we continued working on our dance from Mary Poppins. After dance we had a friendly competition using our measurement skills. Ask your child about this.
In the afternoon we worked on finishing up our first group for our Prairie Alphabet book about Calgary. We finished off our day working on our envelope books. Ask your child about what they are doing.
Tomorrow there is no school for students. Monday there is also no school.
Fun Lunch is Wednesday, May 20th.
Mr. Soulliere is still missing a few swimming forms. If you have not sent yours in please do that ASAP. Also, permission forms and medical forms for swimming are going home today. Those need to be returned as soon as possible as well.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day talking about our "buckets", and ways that we can help to keep them full and to fill others'. Ask your child what they came up with. Then in gym we started working on our basketball dribbling skills. They even tried crossovers and under the leg! After that the students went to music. Ask them what they have been working on. We finished off our morning with two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon, we started with our mental math warm up. Then we finished filling in our tables with the information that we had gathered up to this point on our branches, and went outside to observe them and do our measurements again. We also started doing a guided drawing of a tree. We finished off our day with our last look at Iqaluit, Nunavut.

There are still a few swim forms that I am waiting on. These need to be in as soon as possible, as the office will be collecting them shortly.
With the weather beginning to warm up, the class will be starting to spend more time outside. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for any weather that may happen each day and that they have footwear that is suitable for a lot of moving around and running, as we will likely start having outdoor phys. ed. again soon.

Then some of our students presented the readers' theatre "Rumpelstiltskin". They had been working on this for a couple weeks now and all their hard work definitely paid off! Then we went outside to record some more data on our branches and made observations on the changes that we have seen. Ask your child what changes they have seen on their branch. The children had gym after this, then we spent some time working on our writing. We finished off our day with some mental math and then started creating a table that we are going to use to keep track of all the information that we are recording about our branches.
Swimming forms are due back on Monday, May 11th. Please ensure that you send them back with your child when we return after this weekend. A few other forms have gone out throughout this week.
Class picture day will be Tuesday, May 19th.

Today we started our day working with our buddies on getting some things put into IRIS. Ask your child what they added. Then in dance we watched some musical dance and started learning some dancing from Mary Poppins. After that, we did two rounds of Daily 5 with laptops for students to work on Raz-Kids and Mathletics.
In the afternoon we started working on some writing for Mother's Day. Then we continued working on our look at Iqaluit, Nunavut, with our friends in room 51.
A reminder that swimming forms are due back on Monday. Anyone that is available to volunteer to come for any of the days should include that information on the sheets provided.

This morning we started our day with music. Ask your child what they were learning about. After that we went outside for gym and played bocce ball. This was a game that the students had learned back in the fall, so it was a good refresher for them. Some groups came up with some very interesting rules for how they had to throw the ball! After that we had two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started with our mental math, then we did our weather graph for April. After that we began working on creating tables that we are going to use to record the information that we have gathered on our branches that the students have chosen to observe. Then we met up with our friends to continue our look at Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Tomorrow is Hats On! for Mental Health. Students are encouraged to wear their hats.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day with our monthly cleanup, getting our reading and work bins organized and cleaned up. Then we had two rounds of Daily 5. After that we went to choir, and practiced the Music Monday songs. We finished off the day by working on a math problem.
We have been spending a lot of time outside recently observing the changes that are occurring on the trees out in the field and around the school. Each student picked a branch (on their own or with a partner) and we recorded some data about the branch, it's leaves, and the other parts of it. Over the next few weeks we will continue observing the changes that are happening. The students have also been encouraged to keep an eye on the different plants that may be around their homes to see the changes that are happening with them as well. The changes that we see will be included in our envelope books.

Our words of the week for this week are "warm", "wash", "own", and "show" for grade ones, "question", "grow", "many", and "best" for grade twos, and "bud" for both grades. After that the students started working on some volleyball skills in gym. Then we had music, and we finished the morning with a couple rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon, we started with our mental math. Then we worked on a math problem. Ask your child about this. Then we went outside to observe the trees and the changes that are occurring. Ask your child about some of the things that we saw. We finished our day with our last session looking at Charlottetown, P.E.I. Tomorrow we will begin our look at Iqaluit, Nunavut.
This Wednesday is Fun Lunch. I had made an error in a previous post; this Wednesday is not class picture day. This has been moved to May 19th.

We started our day today doing some reading with our buddies. Then in dance we were learning a new dance. Ask your child about this. Then we joined our friends to practice for our assembly. We finished our morning with some mental math.
We have been doing some amazing work in social studies with our friends. We are completing our unit on PEI where we discovered what life in our smallest province was like. Next we will be moving on to our largest territory which is Nunavut and zooming in on Iqaluit to discover how people live in the Arctic and the challenges they face. At the end of the day we did two rounds of Daily 5 with some students working on their choice of Raz-Kids or Mathletics.
For the assembly tomorrow, students need to wear green, blue and black and we would like them to bring a pair of sunglasses to wear.
Our assembly will begin around 8:45, but parents should come for 8:30 to ensure that they are in and seated for when the rest of the school begins entering the gym. We hope to see you all there:-)

Today we started our day by looking at our goals that we had set previously and added new artifacts to IRIS related to them. After that we continued doing fitness centres in gym. We finished our morning by practicing with the Kindergarten classes and our friends for the assembly on Friday. Things are coming along very nicely and we are looking forward to presenting for the school and the parents.
This afternoon we started with a couple rounds of Daily 5. After that we continued our work on Charlottetown, P.E.I.
On May 21st there will be a workshop held at Christ the King School for parents in the community on Stress and Anxiety. More information about this will be sent out later.
A reminder that this Friday we will be hosting, along with the A.M. Kindergarten class, the Peace Assembly. Parents are welcome to come and watch. We will begin between 8:30 and 8:45.

After that we continued doing fitness centres in gym. Then we had music. Ask your child what they worked on. We finished our morning with two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we did our mental math warm up. Then we went and joined our friends to practice for our assembly on Friday. We finished the day by having our groups rotate which teacher they were working with in social studies. Ask your child what they learned about today.
This Friday is our assembly. We will be starting at around 8:45 and, with the kindergarten classes before us, we are looking at approximately 30 minutes for the whole thing. Families and welcome to come and watch.
Next Wednesday is Fun Lunch. That day is also class picture day.
EDIT: Tomorrow (Tuesday) is a Jersey Day, celebrating our local teams, The Calgary Flames and The Calgary Hitmen, in the playoffs! Students should come to school dressed in their favorite team jerseys and t-shirts. If you don't have anything that suits our teams, please come wearing our team colours, Red and White!
This day is a great way to show pride in your favorite teams. If you choose to wear a jersey belonging to another team, that's fine too!

Today we started our day with reading with our buddies. After that we learned about Ukrainian dance with Ms. Natalka. Then we continued working on word problems in math. We finished our morning working on our assembly songs.
In the afternoon we started with two rounds of Daily 5 and laptop time on Raz-Kids and Mathletics. After that we worked on some writing about "If I were the Lorax, this is how I would help our Earth..." Ask your child what they wrote about.
Coco Brooks order forms were sent home yesterday. These are due back April 30th. Plant order forms are due back next Friday, April 24th. Also, Jump Rope For Heart fundraisers are due back this week.

In the afternoon, we continued working with our friends on our writing from the morning. Then we practiced our song Heal the World, and our rap that we will be performing as well.

We started our day with computers. We worked on Raz-Kids and Mathletics. We also joined our friends in the music room to practice our song, Heal the World. Then we went to dance and we continued our Modern Dance. After that we did two rounds of Daily 5.
In math, we worked on some addition questions. There were some questions adding groups of 10, some questions for adding any two digit numbers, and then some were the same as those but harder. Then we finished our day with some writing. Ask your child what they wrote about.

After that we went down to the Learning Commons as a whole class. Help your child to remember to bring their books back. They need to be returned every two weeks, but if they have finished the book(s) before that they can always bring them in and put them into the Library Book bin. The students are allowed to go down to the Learning Commons during Daily 5 time to get new books. After that we started learning some skipping moves in gym. Then we finished the morning with two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started working on double digit addition and subtraction, using groups of ten. Then we started using some visual language to describe the different parts and functions of leaves. Ask your child about this.

Hello families and friends,
First we went down to our buddies' room and they had made some books that they shared with us. We were able to ask them some questions and tell them some things we liked about the books. We noticed that all of the books had some kind of trap door that led them into a new place. They were also all climbing stories. After that we learned a new dance in dance where we mostly were on the ground. The dance is called modern dance. After dance we did two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started with writing. We had thought of some characters yesterday and today we each picked one to draw on a little sheet. Then we put these onto a ring that will be kept at the back of the room for people to look at to help them come up with ideas for their writing. In science we drew a guided sketch of a leaf. Then we added some labels of what we could remember about the parts of the leaf. Then we finished our day with some math.

There is no school tomorrow for Good Friday. There is also no school for students on Monday, April 6th.

We noticed that all of the books had some kind of trap door that led them into a new place. They were also all climbing stories. After that we learned a new dance in dance where we mostly were on the ground. The dance is called modern dance. After dance we did two rounds of Daily 5.
In the afternoon we started with writing. We had thought of some characters yesterday and today we each picked one to draw on a little sheet. Then we put these onto a ring that will be kept at the back of the room for people to look at to help them come up with ideas for their writing. In science we drew a guided sketch of a leaf. Then we added some labels of what we could remember about the parts of the leaf. Then we finished our day with some math.

There is no school tomorrow for Good Friday. There is also no school for students on Monday, April 6th.
Friday, April 24th, our class along with our friends and a few other classes will be presenting some work for the Peace Assembly. We have been practicing the song "Heal the World" which we will be performing during the assembly. Families are welcome to come that day to watch the assembly.

Hello families and friends,
This morning we started our day with two rounds of Daily 5. After that we continued playing the treasure game in gym. Then we continued working on our Alien Math, and watched a video about place value. Ask your child about this.
In the afternoon we joined our friends for music and practiced the song, Heal the World, that we will be singing for our assembly later this month. A document with the lyrics that we will be singing will be added tomorrow. After that, we had our kick off assembly for Jump Rope for Heart. Forms for this went home to some students today, but I missed getting them to some of the children before they left at the end of the day. If your child did not get one today I will make sure that they get one tomorrow. Then we continued our look at nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and started making some "noun cards". We finished off the day by reviewing the things that we had learned about leaves back in the fall.

Today we started our day with music. Ask your child what they have been learning. After that we did a round of Daily 5. Today, as well as yesterday, we have been reviewing what our good reading and writing looks like. Then in gym the students played capture the treasure. Ask your child about this. Then Mrs. Kinsman visited our class to read the book "Pauli Pastrami Achieves World Peace". We finished our morning with another round of Daily 5, and then did some art around something we could do today to be peaceful today.
In the afternoon we learned about adjectives. This was combined with our work that we did yesterday around nouns. Then the students got into groups and came up with some silly sentences using adjectives and nouns. Ask your child about this. After that we did some Roll & Write in word work using the short /e/ sound. We finished our day continuing work on our Alien Math.

Hello families and friends,
Tomorrow is our field trip to the Cross Conservation Area! The plan is still the same as last time, and we are expecting to be spending the majority of the day outside. Even though the weather will be warm, it is still advisable to send your child with their snow pants, jacket, mitts, hat, scarf, etc. as we will be spending the majority of the day outside and they will be spending a lot of time on the ground.
Tomorrow evening and Friday morning are Student Led Conferences. If you have not yet booked a time there are still some available. Come in and celebrate the learning that the children have been doing.
Next week is Spring Break. Classes do not resume until Tuesday, March 31st.

The last couple days we have been working hard on finishing up the animal portion of our envelope books. These are coming along really well and we are hoping that everyone will have this part done for you all to see during Student Led Conferences. There are still a few families that have not yet signed up for a time. I would really like to see all of you and for you to have an opportunity to share in the learning that your children have been doing the last few months. In the afternoon we continued our work on voice, and talked about different emotions. Ask your child about this.
Tomorrow is Fun Lunch. It will also be our last day to prepare for Student Led Conferences! On Thursday we will be going on our field trip to the Cross Conservation Area. A reminder that the students should still be dressed for the cold weather; jacket, waterproof (if possible) mitts, snow pants, boots, hat, scarf, etc. It is supposed to be moderately warm but there has been some snow lately, so the ground will be wet, and we are expecting to spend the majority of the day outdoors.

Hello families and friends,
This morning we started our day with some buddy reading with our buddies. In dance we learned a new dance. We learned that each rhythm has 9 moves or less. Ask your child about this. After dance we went to our friends' room to work on finishing up our envelope books. We are working on our animal's adaptations for winter.
This afternoon we started with writing letters to our Alberta animals. We were practicing using "voice". Ask your child what this means. Then in math we worked with our imaginary aliens called the Milikans. We had to figure out what the number "33" is in their numbers. They only have 5 fingers and 5 toes, so their numbers are different. One group figured out that it is the number 18 in our numbers. Ask your child about this. Then we finished our day with a round of Daily 5.
Permission forms for the field trip need to be returned ASAP. Mr. Soulliere would like to have them all back by next Monday, March 16th. Fun Lunch is coming up! Volunteer forms for the field trip will be going home tomorrow. If you are able to volunteer and have not yet contacted Mr. Soulliere since our last attempt to go please email him at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>.

Today we started with two rounds of Daily 5. Then we continued our activities with the Omni Kin balls in gym. Ask your child about this. After that we continued working on our animal adaptations in our envelope books with our friends in room 51.
This afternoon we continued our look at verbs that we had started yesterday. We will be making a collection of different ways of saying common verbs to help us with making our writing more interesting. Then the students had some free writing time and author's chair. We finished our day by starting our look at alien math. Ask your child about this.
Field trip forms went home today for our field trip next Thursday, March 19th. Thank you to those of you who have already emailed me that you will be available to volunteer, forms for volunteers will be going out before the end of the week. The itinerary for the day will be the same as it was when the forms went home last time. Please have the permission forms signed and returned to me by next Monday, March 16th. Today we started the day with an assembly where we got to watch the groups that performed during our Tanga evening. They did a really great job! After that we did a round of Daily 5. We also spent some time working towards one of the goals that we have set for ourselves in IRIS. Ask your child what their goal is and what they were working on. Then we finished our day with our friends continuing our look at the cities of Calgary, Charlottetown, and Iqaluit.
Post in the comments below what your Alberta animal is and what it does to prepare for the winter.
This evening at 7 p.m., times for Student Led Conferences will be available for booking. This is done in the same way that you did for Parent Teacher Interviews in December.

This morning the students discussed safety and the things that we need to watch out for with babies during Roots of Empathy. Then in gym they learned a new tag game. Ask your child about this. We finished our morning by continuing on our Alberta animal research.
In the afternoon we looked at our writing from yesterday and worked on some editing and revising. Ask your child about this. Then we looked at some writing samples that I put together as examples for the class to look at and compare when they are working on their own writing. This will help the students to know where their writing is at compared to the expectations and what areas they need to work on further. After that we did one round of Daily 5. Then we finished our day by learning about adding groups of 10.
The new Fun Lunch orders are available online. The dates are April 29th (Taco Time) and May 20th (Subway). Orders are due back by next Friday, March 12th.

Unfortunately we were unable to go on our field trip to the Cross Conservation Area. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 19th. New permission forms will need to be sent home and filled out, I will get those out as soon as possible. If you will be able to volunteer for this day please email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>.
In gym the students started a new game using the drum fit and omnikin balls. Ask your child about this. Our words of the week for this week are "laugh", "around", "fast", and "has" for grade ones and "after", "thank", "who", and "again" for grade twos. A reminder that the grade twos are still expected to know and be able to use correctly the grade one words of the week as well.
In the afternoon we continued working on building our writing stamina and worked on self and peer assessing the writing that we did. We also did a class generated piece of writing about polar bears and then worked on editing and revising it. Over the next while we will be doing a lot of work with this to get the students back into practice. Ask your child about this. We finished the day by learning a new variation of the math game that we had learned last week, this time using odds and evens. Ask your child about this.

A reminder that we will be going on our field trip to the Cross Conservation Area on Monday. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately to be spending the majority of the day outdoors. Also, they should bring a lunch that does not require heating up and that will not produce much garbage. Everything that we bring with us should be coming back with us. We will be spending a lot of time outdoors and on the ground, so even if the weather does warm up a bit, snow pants are highly recommended. They should also bring a spare pair of socks and possibly pants in case they get wet and need to change them.

Today we started our day by continuing to work on rebuilding our writing stamina. We made it to 8 minutes. Then in gym we continued playing hockey. After that we did our walk about through the Hope and Harmony hallways to observe the art that the other students have been working on for their Tanga projects. Then we did some reflective writing about our favourite pieces. Ask your child about what they saw. Tomorrow we will have an opportunity to walk through the Peace hallway to see their work.
In the afternoon we learned a new word work game called Roll & Write. Ask your child about this. Then we did two rounds of Daily 5. At the end of the day we worked with our friends on our envelope books.

STUDENT ART WORK
Your child(ren) have been hard at work creating their masterpieces for sale at our Tanga Night! They are very proud of their work and know that it has been created as a fundraising piece. Each piece of student work will be sold for $10.00. Please take some time to walk about the school to celebrate the amazing work of all of our students!
If you are unable to attend the event but wish to purchase your child's work, please contact your child's teacher and they will collect the money earlier and put a SOLD sticker on that piece. All work will be on display throughout the evening. If you do not wish to purchase the piece, please let your child's teacher know and it will be sold to others at the event.
IN THE FOYER
There are a variety of wonderful Silent Auction items to bid on at the event. They will be displayed in the foyer. Final timing for the Silent Auction will be at 7:30 pm. You need not be in attendance to claim your item. If you are the highest bidder, we will contact you the following day to let you know.
Also in the foyer, will be a special project spearheaded by some of our grade 3/4 students. Please bring your loonies and toonies to supply daily milk for young Tanga students! This is a great opportunity for our students to contribute a small amount to make a big difference! Each contributor will receive a Tanzania/Canada pin in recognition of their donation!
IN THE LIBRARY
Mr. Dadani has brought many beautiful works of art from his trip to Tanga. He purchases them from local artisans in an effort to support the local economy. These will be on sale in the Library at a variety of prices.

There will be a limited number of HeART to HeART Tanga T-Shirts available for sale at the event for $15.00 each on a first come-first served basis.
*Cash or Cheque will be accepted at the Tanga Event. We are unable to process credit cards or Debit transactions.
PERFORMANCES IN THE GYM
Singing Ensemble: A few students from each of the grade 3/4 classes have learned some songs from various places in Africa. We will be singing some Zwahili, Xhosa, and English songs a cappella.
Orff Ensemble: A few students from each of Mrs. McBride’s grade 3/4 classes have come together and learned some African marimba pieces. Students will be playing the pitched Orff instruments to share in the celebration.
The Right to Play: Leaders from our Peace Ambassador Team will be demonstrating games learned at their workshop in January. Through these games, children learn about Global Citizenship and the Rights of the Child.
FACE PAINTING
Mrs. Singer will be offering a face painting station at the event for $5.00 per person. Numbered tickets will be given at time of payment and a 15 minute window will be given so that you can enjoy the event without standing in line for too long.

Then in Roots of Empathy we reviewed what we had learned from Baby Loyal in last week's visit and about why we have the program. In gym the students continued playing hockey games and practicing their hockey skills. We finished our morning by continuing work on our envelope books.
In the afternoon we reviewed the writing we had done yesterday and looked at some of our old writing we had done to see where we are making progress and the areas that we need to continue working on. We also talked about the things that the students think that I am looking for when I look at their writing. They were able to list almost everything! We then worked on building up our writing stamina. Today we made it for 2 minutes. We will try and improve on this tomorrow. After that we did a round of Daily 5. Then we finished our day by playing a new math game. Ask your child about this.
Please return your child's field trip form as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We will be going for the entire day on this coming Monday, March 2nd. Hopefully the weather will agree with us, but I have informed the students that they should be dressed to be outdoors for the whole day. Even if it will be warm the ground will likely be wet and/or snowy so they should wear snow pants.
