Hello families and friends,
A reminder that we will be going on our field trip to the Cross Conservation Area on Monday. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately to be spending the majority of the day outdoors. Also, they should bring a lunch that does not require heating up and that will not produce much garbage. Everything that we bring with us should be coming back with us. We will be spending a lot of time outdoors and on the ground, so even if the weather does warm up a bit, snow pants are highly recommended. They should also bring a spare pair of socks and possibly pants in case they get wet and need to change them.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day by continuing to work on rebuilding our writing stamina. We made it to 8 minutes. Then in gym we continued playing hockey. After that we did our walk about through the Hope and Harmony hallways to observe the art that the other students have been working on for their Tanga projects. Then we did some reflective writing about our favourite pieces. Ask your child about what they saw. Tomorrow we will have an opportunity to walk through the Peace hallway to see their work.
In the afternoon we learned a new word work game called Roll & Write. Ask your child about this. Then we did two rounds of Daily 5. At the end of the day we worked with our friends on our envelope books.

STUDENT ART WORK
Your child(ren) have been hard at work creating their masterpieces for sale at our Tanga Night! They are very proud of their work and know that it has been created as a fundraising piece. Each piece of student work will be sold for $10.00. Please take some time to walk about the school to celebrate the amazing work of all of our students!
If you are unable to attend the event but wish to purchase your child's work, please contact your child's teacher and they will collect the money earlier and put a SOLD sticker on that piece. All work will be on display throughout the evening. If you do not wish to purchase the piece, please let your child's teacher know and it will be sold to others at the event.
IN THE FOYER
There are a variety of wonderful Silent Auction items to bid on at the event. They will be displayed in the foyer. Final timing for the Silent Auction will be at 7:30 pm. You need not be in attendance to claim your item. If you are the highest bidder, we will contact you the following day to let you know.
Also in the foyer, will be a special project spearheaded by some of our grade 3/4 students. Please bring your loonies and toonies to supply daily milk for young Tanga students! This is a great opportunity for our students to contribute a small amount to make a big difference! Each contributor will receive a Tanzania/Canada pin in recognition of their donation!
IN THE LIBRARY
Mr. Dadani has brought many beautiful works of art from his trip to Tanga. He purchases them from local artisans in an effort to support the local economy. These will be on sale in the Library at a variety of prices.
T-SHIRTS
There will be a limited number of HeART to HeART Tanga T-Shirts available for sale at the event for $15.00 each on a first come-first served basis.
*Cash or Cheque will be accepted at the Tanga Event. We are unable to process credit cards or Debit transactions.
PERFORMANCES IN THE GYM
Singing Ensemble: A few students from each of the grade 3/4 classes have learned some songs from various places in Africa. We will be singing some Zwahili, Xhosa, and English songs a cappella.
Orff Ensemble: A few students from each of Mrs. McBride’s grade 3/4 classes have come together and learned some African marimba pieces. Students will be playing the pitched Orff instruments to share in the celebration.
The Right to Play: Leaders from our Peace Ambassador Team will be demonstrating games learned at their workshop in January. Through these games, children learn about Global Citizenship and the Rights of the Child.
FACE PAINTING
Mrs. Singer will be offering a face painting station at the event for $5.00 per person. Numbered tickets will be given at time of payment and a 15 minute window will be given so that you can enjoy the event without standing in line for too long.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day with Music. Ask your child what they worked on. Then in Roots of Empathy we reviewed what we had learned from Baby Loyal in last week's visit and about why we have the program. In gym the students continued playing hockey games and practicing their hockey skills. We finished our morning by continuing work on our envelope books.
In the afternoon we reviewed the writing we had done yesterday and looked at some of our old writing we had done to see where we are making progress and the areas that we need to continue working on. We also talked about the things that the students think that I am looking for when I look at their writing. They were able to list almost everything! We then worked on building up our writing stamina. Today we made it for 2 minutes. We will try and improve on this tomorrow. After that we did a round of Daily 5. Then we finished our day by playing a new math game. Ask your child about this.
Please return your child's field trip form as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We will be going for the entire day on this coming Monday, March 2nd. Hopefully the weather will agree with us, but I have informed the students that they should be dressed to be outdoors for the whole day. Even if it will be warm the ground will likely be wet and/or snowy so they should wear snow pants.
This Thursday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. is our Tanga Art Sale. Come and help celebrate the work that the students have been working on over the past few months to help support the school in Tanga. There will also be a number of other prizes and baskets available.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day doing some reading with our grade 3/4 buddies. Then in dance the students started learning some West African dance. After that we continued working with our friends on our envelope books. Ask your child about what they have done.
In the afternoon we started with two rounds of Daily 5. After that we worked on representing double digit numbers in expanded form. Ask your child about this.
Tomorrow the students are going to be watching a Lion Dance performance in celebration of Chinese New Year. We will also be continuing work on our Tanga art projects and some 100th day of school activities.
Field trip forms for our trip to the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area went home today. We are still looking for a few more volunteers that would be able to assist with this. If you would be available on the day of Monday, March 2nd, please email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>.
Next Thursday night is our Tanga art celebration. Come in and see all the wonderful art work that the students of Cranston school have done to support a school in Tanga, Tanzania.

We started our day today with two rounds of Daily 5. Then in phys. ed. the students played their first mini games of hockey using the skills that they have been practicing. After that we ended our morning by working with our friends on our research books. Ask your child about what they have done.
In the afternoon we started with some math. The students had to use geoboards and elastics to try and build all the different shapes we have used and talked about over the last little while. Then they made a t-table of which ones they could make and which ones they could not. Then we handed out valentines, and went to our friends' class to end the day with a little treat. Ask your child about this.
The students have a nice long weekend ahead of them. School does not resume until next Tuesday.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started the day with music, then we played a few rounds of Guess My Word. Ask your child about this. In gym, the students continued working on their stick handling skills and began working on taking face-offs. Then we had some free reading before the Carnaval activities. These ran for an hour in the morning and then continued for another hour in the afternoon. After that we had a closing assembly and sang some of the French songs that the students have been learning in music. At the end of the day we did two rounds of Daily 5.
For tomorrow, we will have some time in the afternoon for exchanging valentines. There are 22 students in the class. For privacy purposes, I will not be sending out a list of student names. It is not necessary for each individual valentine to have a name for who it is for on it, but if your child would like to give specific ones to specific students they can write those names on them. There will be an opportunity for them to do this at some point during the day tomorrow though.
This week is a short week, with Teachers' Convention on Thursday and Friday. Next Monday, February 16th, is also Family Day and there is no school.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day with word work. Our words of the week are "say", "may", "away", and "play" for grade ones and "won't", "can't", "you're", and "don't" for grade twos. Then we continued working on our passing skills in gym, and started working on stick handling. Ask your child what they worked on in music. Then we made a web about the habitat of the animal we are doing our research on to get ready to do some non-fiction writing.
In the afternoon we started with two rounds of Daily 5. We began by talking about the important parts of Daily 5 and how it should look and sound. We also talked about the students' independent skills, what their job is during Daily 5 time, and what my job is during that time. Ask your child about this. After the first round we watched a short video that I had made of the students working during that time and we looked at what we had done well and what we need to work on. At the end of the day we continued working on our webs with our friends and some students put their good copy into their envelope book and started on their picture to go with it.
Tomorrow is Carnaval! There will be many stations for the students to go to throughout the school and the field. Please ensure that your child is properly dressed to be outdoors for long periods of time. There are a minimal number of activities that will be taking place in the school, so for the majority of the time expect that your child will be outdoors.
Order forms for Tanga T-shirts are due back tomorrow.
This upcoming weekend is a long weekend for students. This Thursday and Friday are Teachers' Convention, so there is no school for students. The following Monday is Family Day. Classes will resume next Tuesday, February 17th.
Volunteer Opportunity: On Thursdays our class has been spending time doing Raz-Kids and Mathletics, usually in collaboration with one of our neighbour classes. I am looking for someone who would be able to come in and assist with this (preferably somebody that is comfortable working with technology). If you would be interested in this and are available from around 10:00 - 11:30 on Thursdays you can email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca> for more information.
EDIT: As Valentine's Day is happening over the long weekend, if any of the students would like to hand out cards we will have time to do that on Wednesday.

We started our day in music working on the Music Monday song. We also sang "Bonhomme, Bonhomme" and "Alouette". Then in Roots of Empathy we talked about feelings. In gym we continued practicing our hockey skills with push passing and we did a speed race. Ask your child about this. Then we worked on finishing up our Cranston art and we started on our Tanga Art. Today we traced our animals. We could choose from a skunk, chipmunk, bear, wolf, deer, bird, and trout.
This afternoon we started with two rounds of Daily 5. Ask your child what they worked on. Then we had math. We continued our work that we had started on Thursday.
For the next three days Mrs. Penner will be in while Mr. Soulliere is in Mexico.

Today we started our day by spending some time doing some organization and catching up on a couple projects that we have on the go. Then in gym we started a unit on hockey. The students were learning how to hold a stick and pass properly. Then we had music. Ask your child what they did there. We finished our morning with our friends in Room 51 beginning our Tanga project and working on our research books.
In the afternoon we did some word work. Our words of the week for this week are "ran", "any", "into", and "today" for grade ones and "happy", "pretty", "too", and "very" for grade twos. Then we did some writing about what we did over the weekend. We finished our day with an assembly about Carnaval. Ask your child about this.
