Hello families and friends,

Today we started our day working on the iPads with our buddies in Room 70.  We were playing word games, math games, or reading.  It was our last day of Mission Impossible in gym.  After gym we did some computers with Ms. Goldberg's class.  We could choose from Mathletics or Raz-Kids.

In the afternoon we started some science.  We did some information on our animals and started planning our animal drawings in our visual journals.  We also made a self-assessment rubric for the students to use while they are doing their books so that we know what we need to include.  Then in math we did...  We also had a surprise fire drill near the end of the day.  We did an awesome job!

What kinds of seals do polar bears eat?  Post your answer in the comments below.

Tomorrow there is no school for students.

Have a great long weekend,

In the afternoon the students did some work on Mathletics.  Then at the end of the day in Writers' Workshop we learned about riddles.  Post a riddle about an animal of your choice in the comments below.

Hello families and friends,

This morning we continued with our research on polar bears.  We worked on turning our research into writing.  Then in gym we started Mission Impossible.  After that we worked on rhythms and we listened to the Music Monday song in music.  Then we did our words of the week.  The words for all students are "straight", "edge", "face", "vertices", "object", "round", and "shape".  Students that finished their word work did a round of Daily 5.

This afternoon in math we made a sorting rule and put shapes into groups, then a partner had to figure out what our sorting rule was.  Then at the end of the day, we joined Mrs. Sloane and Mrs. Kroeker's classes to...

This Wednesday is Fun Lunch.

This Friday there is no school for students.

Hello families and friends,

Today we started our day with some reading.  Then in gym the students continued building their balancing and tumbling skills.  This is working towards when they will be doing Mission Impossible.  Then the students had some free writing time and had "author's chair" to share some of the work that they have done.

In the afternoon we looked at some important terms that the students will come across in their research: "habitat", "predator", and "prey".  What do these terms mean?  Post your answer in the comments below.  Then the students looked through their books that we took out of the library and continued their research.  At the end of the day we reviewed the properties of shapes that we've looked at and began doing some sorting with these.

Tomorrow, the students will be doing break-dancing in dance class.  It is recommended that they wear pants, as they will need to be able to move comfortably and will be doing moves on the floor.

Next Wednesday is Fun Lunch.

On March 2nd, our class will be going to the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation for a field trip.  More details will come in the next few weeks.  If you would be available to volunteer for the field trip you can email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>.

Thanks and have a wonderful Wednesday,
Mr. Soulliere

Hello families and friends,

Another day of music, we rhythms with rhythm sticks.  Then we did a little bit of reading.  In gym we continued doing gymnastics.  Next we had math and we had a shape search.  We had to find shapes on or in objects.  What is the difference between a shape and an object?

In the afternoon we started with science.  We added some labels to our polar bear sketch and we also wrote down some facts about polar bears.  At the end of the day we worked with Mrs. Sloane and Mrs. Kroeker's classes to continue working on our research on the laptops.

Fun Lunch is next Wednesday, January 28th.

Next Friday, January 30th, there is no school for students.

Please remember to return your report card envelopes as soon as possible.

A reminder that library books should be returned whenever you are finished reading them.  We do not have a scheduled library day each week anymore.

Have a great afternoon,

Hello families and friends,

Today we started our day with two rounds of Daily 5, and the students finished up their writing on their imagined creatures.  Then in gym, they continued working on their tumbling and balancing.  At the end of the day we continued practicing our research skills, and we looked at what makes a book good (or not) for research purposes.

Next week we will begin working on the students' individual research on an animal of their choosing.  We will be going to the Learning Commons on Monday afternoon for the students to find a book related to the animal of their choosing.  For Monday, each student needs to decide on one native, wild, Alberta animal to do their research on.  I have suggested that they choose a backup as well, just in case.

Report cards went home today.  Please return the signed envelope to me as soon as possible.  These will be used for the end of the year report cards as well.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Soulliere

Hello families and friends,

This morning we started with two rounds of Daily 5; one round of word work or writing and one round of reading.  Then in gym we continued doing some tumbling.  We also added a new station for juggling and we had to add one balance to our tumbles to make a sequence.  We each had an opportunity to work at three different stations.  After gym we imagined a character in our head and we had to describe it to our partner and they had to draw it out from our description.  Then we created a new imaginary character and started planning some writing about it.  Ask your child what they came up with.

This afternoon we started working with shapes.  We created the shapes with Play-Doh.  We made triangles, squares, circles, and rectangles.  Then at the end of the day, we continued our look at polar bears.

For parents: where is somewhere that polar bears live? Post your answer in the comments below.

Next Fun Lunch is Wednesday, January 28th.

If there are any students who were not receiving the milk program for the first part of the year, and would like to get it for the rest of the year, those forms need to be sent in A.S.A.P.

Have a great afternoon,

Hello families and friends,

Our words of the week this week for grade ones are "went", "this", "like", and "ride" and for grade twos are "were", "funny", "your",  and "what".  The students were challenged to come up with sentences that only used words off of the word wall.

This morning we started our day with music.  The students have been learning about the different types of notes and pauses.  Ask your child about this.  In gym, the students continued working on their tumbling skills.  Then in writing, the students finished working on the plan that they began yesterday for visualizing colours and did their writing.  They came up with some very good sentences!  Post in the comments below a sentence describing a colour of your choice.

This afternoon the students put together their Wonder Books.  We will be working with these going forward as a place where students can record their wonders and their discoveries.  Then we went to our friends in room 51 to finish putting together our bird feeders.  We finished off our day by going to the Learning Commons.

The next Fun Lunch will be Wednesday, January 28th.

Have a great evening,
Mr. Soulliere

Hello families and friends,

This morning we got back into our regular routine.  We started our day by reviewing our good Read to Self and Read to Someone skills and practicing those.  Then in gym we began doing some static balancing.  Our words of the week for this week for grade ones are "how", "an", "in",  and "now", and for grade twos they are "when", "have", "ask", and "some".

This afternoon we created a chart of what we think we know about polar bears.  The students decided to do this animal for our whole group guided research project.  After that we did a guided sketch of a polar bear.  At the end of the day we continued our work on visualization in writing.  The students had to imagine their own special place.  Ask your child about what they came up with.

This Friday, January 9th, Scholastic Book Orders are due.

Next Friday, January 16th, report cards will be going home.

Have a wonderful Wednesday,
Mr. Soulliere

This afternoon we did some art with Scott and Jackie from the Leighton Art Centre.  We did some landscape art with watercolour paint.  We also tried blind contour drawing.  Ask your child about these.
